3 FUN Ways to Teach Musicality on Zoom

May 13, 2020

Tired of Zoom yet?

All things zoom.. that's where we're all at right now. Currently I'm teaching piano that way and have even played a company ballet class that way, it's not ideal! Especially for the teacher.. It's crazy hard to discern if your students are being musical at all, with the delays of internet and zoom time. By this time (2 months into Covid-19 social isolation), you know this full well and are likely nodding your head emphatically!

We know that music education and training is beneficial...

Surprises in the Details

May 05, 2020

Have you ever built anything?

Have you ever built a house? Or even gutted and refinished a basement suite? The details are a surprise sometimes. You start off with this grand picture in your head and then when you boil it down to the details, sometimes there are some unexpected surprises.

For example, years ago my husband and I designed a legal basement suite for a very small space (550 square feet). I did all the dirty work of cross referencing common measurements for all the appliances, doors, showers,...

Thai Food, Chopin and Mazurkas.. Say what?!

Apr 02, 2020

Thai food and the Mazurka.. say what?

A mazurka is an interesting thing..it's full of flavour and excitement. It hits lively and quick but zips away before you can settle down with it. It's like the hit of spice in Thai food.. smacks you, it's zippy, but it's so freakin' good that you just keep wanting more!

We're in the depths of Covid-19 and I am getting tired of my own cooking.. can you tell? lol. I'd LOVE a good serving of Thai green curry with chicken, and cashews.. sigh. Ah well, back to the...

Embrace the B-

Mar 21, 2020

So, here's the thing about us, you and I, we are perfectionists, A+ work, always! That's one of the reasons we do what we do.. we love precision and articulate work that is nearly perfect. If we can't do it well (think A+), then we don't really want to do it at all.

Unfortunately, in times like these, where many of you are teaching behind a camera or an Iphone, or you're at least considering it, that drive and passion for perfection and excellence is holding you back from your awesome!  Your...

Getting digital

Mar 17, 2020

These are unprecedented times .. it's spring here in Calgary, and this is usually my busiest season, this year, I'm home. The upside is, everyone in my family is healthy, so far, so I have a LOT to be thankful for!

When I began this online journey, I was totally lost as far as how to connect everything, and build a community online. I'd say I'm a far cry from a master yet, but I'm well on my way! Given this season of seclusion, I thought I'd take a little time to give you a few tools and tips in case...

My mind was blown! (How have I never stumbled upon this before??!)

Feb 25, 2020

I had an epiphany recently.. I was playing a class for a teacher who asked me for a mazurka. They then proceeded to mark and count a 3 with the lilt of a mazurka, but on every beat.. like a polka mazurka.. plus a little slower, like a polka mazurka.. THEN, as I was playing the perfect piece of music for the exercise, a polka mazurka, I was struck by sections within it that had groupings of 3 eighth notes (a triplet) on a beat and my mind exploded.. not literally, but almost!

Mazurka: Quicker,...

How much power are you giving your feelings?

Feb 17, 2020

Confidence..

a topic of occasional thought for me these days, deep in the night and early mornings when I'm typing away by myself and have space to think. The unexpected waves of feelings of insecurity and inadequacy about starting a business remind me of earlier times; of being a lifeguard, of learning to play for ballet and of being a brand new mom. The great thing is, we are ever growing, changing and learning!

Lifeguarding Days..

Even after all the training to become a lifeguard, including years...

I'm a Numbers Nerd, just going to own it right now!

Feb 10, 2020

So, I was working on my music training course (coming out for the first time sometime in May/June, pending disaster; sign up here if you're interested) and was curious on the break down of all the music; how much of it was duple and how much of it was triple. I popped them all into a graph and it was so interesting that I had to share! FYI: this list is not exhaustive, but, for your purposes of teaching on the fly, it's probably as exhaustive as you want it to be! lol (Feel free to email me if you think...

Cast a Vote for Your Best Self.. Explore 6/8 Allegros

Feb 01, 2020

I was listening to a business podcast recently and they were interviewing James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits. That man is seriously brilliant and at least 1 out of every 5 sentences he spoke was quotable, but the one that stuck in my brain the most was this..

Every action you take is like a vote for the kind of person that you want to become. -James Clear (Author of Atomic Habits)

So true, right? And interesting.. When I walk through the grocery store and grab a bag of chips instead of a some...

Rough Beginnings and Special Times: The Life of a Ballet Accompanist

Jan 21, 2020

This blog is a little different, ok, a LOT different. I wanted to take a little bit of time to share a few stories of my accompanist/musician experiences in the ballet studios of my life.. from my side of the piano; some rough, some special and some funny.

Rough Beginnings

19 years ago I walked into my first ballet class to play for the first time with a small but mighty mix of photocopies (that another accompanist had given me) that would be perfect for ballet class. Warm up was fine, plies, fine.....
